Title of Thesis: THE EFFECTS OF CO2 AND TEMPERATURE ON THE SOIL MICROBIAL CARBON AND NITROGEN OF URBAN AND RURAL FORESTS Elizabeth Kulka, Master of Science, 2015 Thesis Directed By: Professor Marla S. McIntosh Department of Plant Science This study investigated and compared the effects of elevated temperature and elevated CO2 on the microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN) of urban and rural forest soils. Soils analyzed from Baltimore Long-Term Ecological Research forests in June and October, 2014 had greater MBC and MBN quantities in rural than urban forests. A controlled environmental chamber study was conducted where June-collected soils were planted with hybrid poplars and exposed to ambient and elevated temperature and CO2 levels. After exposure for 49 days, MBC and MBN quantities were again greater in rural than urban soils. Soil MBC was greater under elevated than ambient CO2, while soil MBN was greater under elevated than ambient CO2 and temperature. Results suggest that if temperature and CO2 levels increase in the Baltimore area as predicted, microbial C and N pools in the studied forests will increase, and will remain greater in rural than

Changes in soil carbon sequestration in Pinus massoniana forests along an urban-to-rural gradient of southern China

Urbanization is accelerating globally, causing a variety of environmental changes such as increases in air temperature, precipitation, atmospheric CO2, and nitrogen (N) deposition. However, the effects of these changes on forest soil carbon (C) sequestration remain largely unclear. Here, we used urban-to-rural environmental gradients in Guangdong Province, southern China, to address the potenti...

Do cities simulate climate change? A comparison of herbivore response to urban and global warming.

Cities experience elevated temperature, CO2 , and nitrogen deposition decades ahead of the global average, such that biological response to urbanization may predict response to future climate change. This hypothesis remains untested due to a lack of complementary urban and long-term observations. Here, we examine the response of an herbivore, the scale insect Melanaspis tenebricosa, to temperat...

Simulation Models, GIS and Nonpoint-Source Pollution (II)

The relationship between plant roots and interrill soil erosion is important in dynamic soil erosion predictions. Rainstorm simulations of similar intensity (63.5 mm h-1) were conducted in the summer of 1989 on 1 by 1 m field plots of Cecil sandy loam (clayey, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Kanhapludult) to study the effect of different root length densities, L(v) (cm cm-3), of corn (Zea mays L.), d...

Gains from diversification on convex combinations: A majorization and stochastic dominance approach

By incorporating both majorization theory and stochastic dominance theory, this paper presents a general theory and a unifying framework for determining the diversification preferences of risk-averse investors and conditions under which they would unanimously judge a particular asset to be superior. In particular, we develop a theory for comparing the preferences of different convex combination...

Improved immunogenicity of tetanus toxoid by Brucella abortus S19 LPS adjuvant.

BACKGROUND Adjuvants are used to increase the immunogenicity of new generation vaccines, especially those based on recombinant proteins. Despite immunostimulatory properties, the use of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as an adjuvant has been hampered due to its toxicity and pyrogenicity. Brucella abortus LPS is less toxic and has no pyrogenic properties compared to LPS from other gram negati...
